U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss (Mary Elizabeth Truss) announced her resignation after six weeks in office following a month of political turmoil and mounting pressure on her premiership. The Conservative Party is expected to have a leadership election within the next week. After 44 days, Truss is stepping down. Labour party leader Keir Starmer has called for an immediate general election after Liz Truss announced her resignation.

Truss said, “I recognize though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.”
