Elizabeth II was the Queen of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms. Elizabeth was born in Mayfair, London, as the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York. The Queen came to the throne in 1952. Few Britons have known another monarch.

Queen Elizabeth II, the U.K.’s longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.

Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on Thursday.

With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the U.K. as the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms. Within hours, Prince Charles will be formally proclaimed king in a ceremony dating back hundreds of years. At 73, Charles is the oldest person to accede to the throne in British history. Clarence House said Charles will be known as King Charles III.

King Charles I was executed by beheading in 1649. King Charles II went into exile for 9 years until 1660.
