Millennial Chilean Leftist Gabriel Boric Defeats Kast to Become President

Posted on 12/20/2021

Chilean leftist Gabriel Boric Font (age 35) is a politician and former student leader who is the president-elect of Chile. He has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since March 11, 2014, representing the Magallanes and Antarctic district. With over 83% of votes counted, Boric had 55.52% versus José Antonio Kast’s 44.48%, and his lead appeared to be widening. Jose Antonio Kast is on the right wing.

Meanwhile outgoing Chile President Sebastian Pinera, a conservative, held a video conference with Boric to offer his government’s full support during the three month transition.

“I am going to be the president of all Chileans,” Boric said in the brief televised appearance with President Sebastian Pinera.

Kast finished ahead of Boric by two points in the first round of voting in November 2021 but failed to secure a majority of votes. This created a head-to-head runoff against Boric.
