96 TIMES A DAY: Americans Check Their Smart Phones According to 2019 Survey Data
Posted on 09/29/2021
Asurion, LLC is a privately held company based in Nashville, Tennessee, that provides insurance for smartphones, tablets, consumer electronics, appliances, satellite receivers and jewelry. 2019 research data by Asurion shows that Americans check their phones 96 times a day. This is a 20% increase from a similar survey researchers conducted in 2017. Asurion-sponsored survey by Market Research Firm Solidea Solutions conducted August 18-20, 2019 of 1,998 U.S. smartphone users, compared to an Asurion-sponsored survey conducted by market research company OnePoll between Sept. 11 – 19, 2017 of 2000 U.S. adults with a smartphone.
Smart Phone Addiction Targets the Young
Asurion’s data shows that 18- to 24-year-olds check their phones twice as much as the national average. This age group is also aware of their smart phone usage. Smartphone addiction is not a diagnosable condition under the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Vast amounts of research show that smartphone use triggers dopamine, the neurotransmitter responsible for the brain’s reward and pleasure zones. This is the same chemical release while eating.
Another key finding is that texting is now common among all age groups, including baby boomers. Baby boomers are now seven times more likely to text than talk in-person and twice as likely to send a text rather than dial a phone number.
