New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced he will resign effective in 14 days amid sexual harassment allegations. Cuomo is being accused of the sexual harassment of at least 11 women and faced calls from his own party to resign, including U.S. President Joe Biden. Cuomo has been governor of New York for three terms. The New York state attorney general says Cuomo violated sexual harassment laws. Cuomo still faces the possibility of criminal charges.
Under the New York state’s impeachment laws, Cuomo would be removed from office if the Assembly votes to impeach.
Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul will become the state’s 57th governor in about two weeks.
New York state has a history of governors entangled in scandals. Eliot Spitzer was elected Governor of New York in 2006 by the largest margin of any candidate, but his tenure would last less than two years after it was uncovered that he patronized a prostitution ring called Emperors Club VIP. Spitzer first drew the attention of federal investigators when his bank reported suspicious money transfers under the anti-money laundering provisions of the Bank Secrecy Act and the Patriot Act. Spitzer resigned as governor in March 2008.
