Formed in 2017, South San Francisco-based Nobell Foods genetically engineers its soybeans to produce a plant-based casein. Casein (from Latin caseus “cheese”) is a family of related phosphoproteins. The GMO company is keen on making its soybean concoction to have the taste and texture of cheese.

Nobell Foods raised US$ 75 million in its Series B round. Latham & Watkins LLP represented Nobell Foods in the transaction. Investors in the Series B round include Andreessen Horowitz, Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and FootPrint Coalition Ventures, as well as several other participants.
