Former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld Dies at Age 88

Donald Henry Rumsfeld is a retired American politician. Rumsfeld served as Secretary of Defense from 1975 to 1977 under U.S. President Gerald Ford, and again from January 2001 to December 2006 under U.S. President George W. Bush. He is both the youngest and the second-oldest person to have served as Secretary of Defense.

He died on June 29, 2021 at his home in Taos, New Mexico. He was 88. The cause was multiple myeloma, said Keith Urbahn, a spokesman for the family.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Donald Rumsfeld, an American statesman and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather,” his family said in a statement

“History may remember him for his extraordinary accomplishments over six decades of public service, but for those who knew him best and whose lives were forever changed as a result, we will remember his unwavering love for his wife Joyce, his family and friends, and the integrity he brought to a life dedicated to country.”

Rumsfeld was born on July 9, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois. Rumsfeld led the Department of Defense on September 9/11 and at the start of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
