1. Bitcoin’s extreme price volatility carried into the weekend. The price of Bitcoin (BTC) May 23, 4:14 PM UTC is 32,309.00 USD.
2. 21 runners including champion athlete and Paralympic star are killed when hail, freezing rain, and high winds impact 62-mile Chinese cross-country mountain race in Gansu province. Official news agency Xinhua confirmed 21 of the 172 participants have reported as died. Runners Liang Jing and Huang Guanjun are among the dead.
3. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) vaccine safety group is investigating reports that some teenagers and young adults who have been vaccinated against coronavirus have experienced heart problems (myocarditis) days after receiving their second shot. Myocarditis results in an inflammation of the heart muscle which can occur following certain infections. These are with the mRNA vaccines, which made by Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech. The working group then reviewed the data on myocarditis on May 17, 2021.
4. Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers in a Bloomberg TV interview says “Crypto has a chance of becoming an agreed form that people who are looking for safety hold wealth in. My guess is that crypto is here to stay, and probably here to stay as a kind of digital gold.”
5. As a high-ratio of Democrat politicians and political groups like BLM pressure city and state governments on defunding local police, violent crime the U.S. is experiencing a significant uptick. In the U.S., homicides in cities were up 25% to 40% in 2020, the biggest single increase since 1960. For example, St. Louis, MO has experienced a 50-year high murder rate with nearly 100 unfilled jobs in its police department. St. Louis Mayor Tishaura O. Jones wants to defund the police department and shut down a city jail. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported St. Louis had 87 homicides per 100,000 residents in 2020. Chicago’s largest police union – Fraternal Order of Police – on May 19, 2021 issued a vote of no confidence against Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Chicago Police Department Superintendent David Brown.
6. Mount Nyiragongo volcano erupted on May 22, 2020. The volcano is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Goma is a nearby town of some 2 million people.
