U.S. President Joe Biden banned most travel to the U.S. from India beginning Tuesday. India is facing a surge in coronavirus cases. The policy will take effect May 4, 2021. Johns Hopkins data shows India reporting an average of about 357,000 new cases per day over the past seven days. United Airlines is the only major U.S. carrier operating nonstop service between the two countries, with four daily departures to India.
During his 2020 presidential campaign, Biden blamed his predecessor for travel bans on China during the COVID initial surge. Wuhan, China is where the coronavirus originated from.
