Norway’s sovereign wealth fund is called Norway Government Pension Fund Global. Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM) oversees the sovereign fund.
The majority of the sovereign wealth fund’s assets are managed internally vs. external fund managers. NBIM hired a sports psychologist who trains military pilots in a bid to make its internal managers more comfortable with taking risks. NBIM’s Chief Executive Nicolai Tangen ran his own hedge fund for years and used a sports psychologist for eight years.
NBIM hired Anders Meland who has a PhD in sports psychology from the Norwegian Sports Academy. Meland also has military school education with the Nordic country’s armed forces.
Hedge funds are known to hire psychologists and personal coaches for traders and portfolio managers. In the early 1990s, hedge fund honcho Steve Cohen hired the late psychiatrist Ari Kiev for his hedge fund SAC Capital. Hedge fund investor Paul Tudor Jones hired Tony Robbins, a world famous performance coach, to help his firm.
