The Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak is spreading fast in the golden state of California. California is also home to a large homeless population in its urban corridors of Los Angeles and San Francisco, which could be a magnet for spreading the virus. U.S. Governor Gavin Newsom expects about 56% of the state’s population, 25.5 million people, will be infected with the coronavirus within the next eight weeks. Newsom wrote a March 18th dated letter to U.S. President Donald Trump about the dire situation in California. Newsom formally requested that the U.S. Navy’s USNS Mercy, the largest hospital ship in the world, be deployed to California. California is home to many large U.S. technology and media companies, as well as satellite offices for sovereign wealth funds.

“The acquisition of the Mercy here off the coast of the state of California would provide additional 1,000 bed capacity, provides support for pharmacists and other diagnostic equipment,” said CA Governor Newsom in a news release.

“This resource will help decompress the health care delivery system to allow the Los Angeles region to ensure that it has the ability to address critical acute care needs, such as heart attacks and strokes or vehicle accidents, in addition to the rapid rise of COVID-19 cases,” Newsom said.
