U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo went to Dakar to meet with government officials – the first part of a 10-day trip through Africa and the Middle East. GE Africa (part of General Electric) signed a number of Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with Senelec, the national electricity company of Senegal, and Senegal FONSIS, the country’s sovereign wealth fund. The MoUs were about supporting infrastructure in Senegal in the healthcare (diagnostic technology) and power sectors. One of the MoUs with GE include upgrading Senegal’s power plans and expanding access to gas resources. Combined, U.S. officials estimate the Senegal/GE deals to be worth around US$ 200 million.

Another deal highlighted during Pompeo’s visit was with Bechtel Corporation and Ageroute. Ageroute is Senegal’s road construction agency. The agreement entails Bechtel Corporation to construct around 100 miles of highway linking Dakar to the more northern city of Saint-Louis.
