British Voters Rejected Hardline Socialism, Landslide Win for Brexit Boris
Posted on 12/13/2019
U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Conservative party won a landslide election. The Tories secured its biggest majority since the 1980s. Jeremy Corbyn, Leader of the Labour Party, disclosed he will not be the party lead in a future election. The Labour party had its worst election result since 1935, as voters shied away from hardline socialist policies and the party’s uncertain stance on Brexit. Furthermore, Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson lost in East Dunbartonshire to the Scottish National Party candidate by 149 votes.
In a victory speech, Johnson said, “With this mandate and this majority, we will be able to get Brexit done because this election means that getting Brexit done is the irrefutable, irresistible, unarguable decision of the British people. With this election, we can put an end to all those miserable threats of a second referendum.”
After the vote count, Boris Johnson met with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace to ask to form a new government.
