Former QIA Chairman Sentenced

Former QIA Chairman Ali Sharif Al-Emadi has been sentenced, and is due to serve 20 years for charges of bribery, damage to public funds, and abuse of position and power. Many details of the case have been hidden from public view, but news of the criminal case was publicized. He has been ordered to pay a fine of US$ 16.7 billion for laundering US$ 5.6 billion according to a court document. Al-Emadi was instrumental in making Qatar National Bank a major Middle East lender. He also helped lead Qatar Airways as President of the Board and was Qatar’s Finance Minister. Qatar’s ministers used to be immune from prosecution, but that is no longer the case.
Al-Emadi received his BS in Finance from the University of Arizona in 1992.
